You should also fix the cables in places that provide easy access whenever you need to troubleshoot.

Ideally, all you will need are two ports in each room. 

Devices like the computer, printer, or a game console should be as close as possible to the Ethernet port sockets. This is to prevent a layout of wiring that is all over the place that can be hazardous. Wires that are across the room can be dangerous because you can trip over them and seriously injure yourself. 

That is why using cable clips to fix these wires to the walls, ceilings, or other appropriate places, may be necessary.

Decide The Cables You Will Use

The most widely used cables for Ethernet connections are UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair). Solid UTP cables are recommended in homes because they are more durable than stranded UTP cables.  

These cables are available in different categories. The most common category for the home is Cat 6, which has a speed of up to 10 Giga bites per second that is abbreviated as "Gbps." 

Cat 5 is also suitable for the home, though it is slower at a speed of 1GbpsCat 7 has a higher speed at 40Gbps at 50 meters (164 feet) or 100Gbps at 15 meters (49 feet). There’s also Cat 8, but this is not suitable for home use, but rather most appropriate for data center applications. This is because the speeds are much faster than what people need. 

In the future, expect to see Cat9 or 10. With continuous technological advancement, this is possible in the next few years.

Once you have your wiring network design ready, choose the cables you need, and decide on the location of devices in the rooms, you can go ahead and wire your house. This can be a complicated process and may be suitable for a professional if you do not have the skills.

The Ethernet cables are usually terminated in an Ethernet socket and RJ45 plug. If the cable has not yet been wired into the Ethernet socket, your technician can do this. The basic steps for this task include:

  1. Cut off one end of the cable using a crimping tool.
  2. Strip off a few inches of the outer protection using the same crimping tool.
  3. Separate the wires that are now visible.
  4. Secure the cable into the socket using a cable tie.
  5. Fix and punch down each of the wires into their appropriate connectors using a punch-down tool.
