Best Places For Kitchen Paper Towel Holder

When it comes to the placement of paper towel holders in the kitchen, there are three main options: sitting on the counter, mounted under a cabinet, or hidden behind a cabinet door. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these approaches, and we'll talk more about each.

We'll also recommend some helpful products that will help you make the most of each method.

Sitting On The Counter

The counter adjacent to the sink is a timeless spot for a paper towel holder. This location makes a lot of sense; after all, it makes grabbing a paper towel to dry your hands with a breeze.

The paper towel holder doesn't have to be directly next to the sink; the idea is to simply have it within arm's reach so that you don't drip water everywhere when reaching for a paper towel after washing your hands.

The main downside to putting a paper towel holder on the counter is that it takes up counter space. Depending on the size/style of your kitchen, counter space might be hard to come by. In kitchens with limited counter space, every square inch counts.

In addition, depending on the setup, it can be somewhat difficult to get a paper towel this way; it's generally a two-hand process to do so.

What's more, a counter paper towel holder might be seen as somewhat of an eyesore. That said, there are all kinds of paper towel holders on the market, so you're sure to find one that complements your kitchen's style.

Mounted Under A Cabinet

There's also a strong case to be made for mounting a paper towel holder under the cabinet. In recent years, this approach has become more popular.

The primary benefit of this method is that it frees up your valuable counter space. As mentioned earlier, if your kitchen doesn't have an abundance of counter space, mounting a paper towel holder under a cabinet can free up some much-needed space.

Additionally, this setup is quite convenient; it's easier to use one hand to grab a paper towel and go.

But one of the downsides to this approach is that the paper towel holder might not be as close to the sink as it otherwise would be with the former method. Depending on where your kitchen sink is in relation to your cabinets, you might have a bit of a trek to make with wet hands.

Perhaps the biggest downside to this approach is that it requires installation and possibly tools depending on whether the holder requires screws.

Where Do You Hang A Paper Towel Rack Under The Cabinet?

Before you install a paper towel holder under the cabinet, you first need to determine the best location for it.

There's no "right" way to do it per se, but generally, the best approach is to attach the holder as close to the front of the cabinet as possible with the paper towel roll still being completely under the cabinet. This will ensure easy access to the paper towels.

How Do You Install A Paper Towel Holder?

Thankfully, the process to install a paper towel holder is pretty simple. Before getting started, it's worth noting that the process to install a holder with a screw-in design will be easier with a second set of hands. Here are the steps:

  1. Hold the paper towel holder up to the bottom of the cabinet and position it as desired. Use a pencil to mark the screw holes if the holder has a screw-in design, or mark the perimeter of the attachment point if the holder has a self-adhesive design. If you want to be more precise, consider using a ruler, level, or tape measure to ensure all parts of the attachment point are parallel to the edge of the cabinet.
  2. Have an assistant hold the paper towel holder in place up against the bottom of the cabinet. Then, with a screwdriver or drill, install the screws. For a self-adhesive design, simply stick the adhesive against the bottom of the cabinet, ensuring the attachment point coincides with the perimeter drawn earlier.

Hidden Behind The Cabinet Door

Another option is to hang a paper towel holder behind a cabinet door using a special hideaway system. The primary benefit of this method is that it completely eliminates the visual footprint of the paper towel holder.

One drawback of this method is that it's somewhat less convenient than the other options we've discussed. Each time you want to get a paper towel, you have to open the cabinet door to access the roll. Sure, this is a minor inconvenience, but it's an inconvenience nonetheless.

Simply hang this holder on the inside of a cabinet door of your choice, and your roll of paper towels will instantly become inconspicuous.
