Laundry Basket Locations

Laundry baskets don't really seem like that big an issue until you realize how much hustle it can take to carry it up and down stairs. To make things easy, we're going to break each favorite spot down for you.

The Bedroom

The bedroom is one of the most obvious picks for a laundry basket's placement, simply because that's where most people change their clothing. Since it's right where you change, putting the clothes in the hamper is a cinch. This reduces the chances of falling into the urge of throwing clothes on a nearby chair to put them in the hamper later.

The Bedroom Closet

If you don't like to have your laundry hanging out in the open, then your bedroom's closet is a good place to put it. Like the bedroom, it's close enough to the place where you change clothes that you won't end up dropping them on the floor. Unlike the bedroom, placing a hamper in your closet will keep your dirty laundry out of sight. It's a little more privacy, really.

The Bathroom

Most of us take off dirty clothes just as it's time to bathe. The bathroom is a good place to do this. Most people who keep laundry baskets in the bathroom do so by putting them either close to or inside the linen closet. However, this is one of those locations that usually only works if you have a large enough bathroom. If you don't, don't bother with it.

With that said, you don't need that much space to make this option happen. Many people can make do with a Jack and Jill bathroom and still keep hampers in there.

Laundry and basket found in the laundry room

Though it's not the most convenient way to store dirty laundry initially, having a laundry basket in the laundry room does make sense. If you choose this option, make sure you actually are motivated enough to bring the laundry you have there, rather than piliing it on your floor!

Where Should I Keep My Laundry Basket (Feng Shui)?

If you are a fan of Feng Shui and want to maximize your luck, the number one thing you should not do is put a laundry basket in the bedroom or nearby. The bad smells can mess with the energy in your home. A better option would be to keep the basket in the laundry room and to make a point of keeping the baskets sorted and as clean as possible.

If you don't have a laundry room, keep your laundry basket on a bathroom shelf. This will help minimize the impact of dirty laundry on your home's Feng Shui.

How To Build A Laundry Basket Holder

If you take a look online, several different tutorials allow you to build a laundry basket holder from scratch, sometimes even going so far as to use recycled pallets. Most of these are fairly labor-intensive. We're going to make it easier, simply because most of us don't have the time to do all that sanding work.

  1. Start by buying a small bookcase, or set of drawers. Ideally, it'll be a model that's IKEA-like in the sense that it's easy to assemble.
  2. Buy a set of laundry baskets that fit in the bookcase.
  3. If the bookcase or shelving comes with drawers, skip assembling them and do not put in the sliders for the drawers. Instead, simply put the laundry baskets on the shelves. Ta-da! You have a brand new basket holder.

With all that said, you do not always need a laundry basket holder. If you don't have more than two laundry baskets, there's no need to build a shelving unit. Of course, if you want to make things even more convenient for you, just use a laundry shelf like the one below.

How Do You Organize Dirty Laundry?

If you're looking for a way to curb the time it takes to do laundry, then it makes sense to have a way to organize dirty laundry. However, there are some tips and methods that seem to work well.

Separate Colors And Whites

The easiest and smartest way to make your life a little easier during laundry day, is to make a point of separating all your laundry in a "colors" basket and a "whites" basket before it hits your machine. This is something that's easy enough to get your kids into the habit of doing and can also optimize your laundry's speed.

While it is important to sort by fabric type, sorting your laundry by colors is usually the easiest way to prevent staining and bleeding. You won't regret it!

Organize Your Laundry By Use

We all have baskets of laundry that have to be done involving necessity. Clothes are, by far, the most frequently-washed type of dirty laundry that you'll have. However, other things can end up in a laundry bag, too. If you have a lot of towels, bedsheets, table linens, and curtains that need caring for, it may make sense to separate those from clothing.

Along with the convenience factor, it's worth noting that many types of bedsheets and comforters will need professional laundering. This can cut down on your overall laundry bill and reduce the chances of ruining certain textiles.

Individual Laundry Baskets

If you live with a lot of people, the best way to sort laundry is just to give people a basket of their own. This is especially true with roommates since they may need to pay their own way at the laundromat or a preferred detergent type. If you have many different peoples' laundry, you might want to get color-coded baskets for everyone.

When most people start setting up their homes, laundry baskets are rarely ever the first thing on their minds. While it's not the biggest issue you might have when you're putting things together, it's still a fairly important part of your home's flow. Most people choose to keep their hampers in their bedrooms or their bedroom closets due to the convenience factor.

However, that's not always the best option. If you're a believer in feng shui, then putting your laundry baskets in the bathroom or in the laundry room makes more sense. Of course, when you're putting together your laundry layout, it makes sense to take your time to figure out your needs. So, think about each option and choose the right location for your home. There are really no wrong answers.
