How Big Is A Queen Size Bed Really?

If you're in the market for a new bed, chances are that you've been looking at a queen size bed due to its "middle of the road" sizing. If you've been curious about whether this is the right size bed for you, we've got the answers you're looking for.

There are three different types of queen size beds, each with their own measurements. All queen size beds will have mattresses that range from 9 to 16 inches in thickness.

  • The standard queen size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long and remains the most popular bed type in the county.
  • An Olympic queen (sometimes called an expanded queen) will be 66 inches wide by 80 inches long.
  • A California queen bed is 60 inches wide by 84 inches long.

While all queen beds can offer a lot of space, not all queen beds are built equally. Keep reading, and you'll learn more about what this bed size can do for you.

Are All Queen Mattresses The Same Size?

Queen size beds are the most popular bed size category on the market. However, that's just it---they're a category, which means that there are different sizes within that category. To get a full understanding of each size, it's best to look at each bed option.

Standard Queen Size

Standard queens are the most common queen size bed on the market and are probably the size you are used to seeing. This mattress will be 60 inches wide by 80 inches tall, which is enough to fit one large person or a space-saving couple comfortably, according to BetterSleep. Mattress thickness will range between nine to 16 inches.

Most standard queen beds will have a slimmer mattress closer to 9 inches, like this one from Jingxun. However, it's possible to find luxury mattresses as tall as 16 inches in some cases.

Olympic Queen Size

Olympic queen beds are also called extended queens or expanded queens, depending on what region you're from.  These mattresses have a similar thickness to standard queen beds but will have an additional six inches of width to their design. This brings their typical measurements to 66 inches wide by 80 inches long by 9 inches thick.

Finding an Olympic queen mattress is tricky, which is why many people choose an Orthosleep if they want to experience that boost of extra space. This one from Amazon is a great choice.

California Queen Size

A rare size to see in both bedding and mattress stores, a California queen bed has a longer length and often has a slightly deeper depth. The typical measurements here are 60 inches wide by 84 inches long, with a mattress that's closer to 10 or 12 inches in depth on average. These mattresses are tough to shop for as a result of their rarity.

Are All Queen Bed Frames The Same Size?

Clean towels on bed at hotel room

Much like how all queen mattresses aren't the same size, bed frames also can vary depending on the type of queen sizing they have. This makes sense since bed frames are usually made to work with specific mattress sizes. In many cases, using the wrong queen bed frame with the wrong mattress will lead to the mattress being unable to fit on the bed. So, choose your mattress carefully.

Can A Queen Size Bed Fit A 10 x 10 Room?

Most people choose a queen bed because they want to have more walking space or living space in their bedrooms. A standard queen size bed is just large enough to work with a 10x10 room, with most interior designers agreeing that a little extra space is a better choice. If you want to get an Olympic or California mattress, you might need a slightly larger bedroom.

Why Are Queen Beds The Most Popular Size?

There are plenty of reasons why this might be, but it seems like versatility is the primary perk people love. Queen beds are big enough for couples and singletons alike. They work in average-sized rooms, but allow enough space to make people feel comfortable. Because they're so popular, they're also easy to shop for.

Are All Queen Sheet Sets The Same Size?

All queen sheet sets are not the same size, and there's often more variation to this than you'd think. Along with the disparities between specialty queen mattress sizes like Olympic queens and California queens, there are also disparities between mattress thicknesses that can make sheets hard to use. Here's how to pick the right sheet:

  • A typical mattress will be between seven to 14 inches in thickness, and standard queen sheets will accommodate this. Most bed sheet sets are standard-sized, and if you have a standard mattress, then getting sheets will be a breeze. They also tend to be the most affordable option on this list.
  • If your mattress is between 12 to 15 inches in thickness, you should look into deep pockets. Deep pockets will help keep your sheets in place during the night without having them pulled off. Some people also might prefer to use deep pockets on standard mattresses, simply because of the extra space they off.

  • An extra-deep set of sheets is meant for mattresses that are 15 to 21 inches deep. Extra deep sheets, like these snuggly sheets, are for the thickest mattresses on the market. They are also noted for being great for beds that have mattress toppers or other similar accessories.

How Do You Order The Right Queen Sheet Size?

When it comes to sheet size, your order will have two different parts. The first will be the type of queen bed that you have—standard, Olympic, or California. Then, you need to look at the thickness of the mattress, which could be standard, deep, or extra deep. If they don't specify a depth, it's safe to assume that you have standard depth sheets.

Can You Use Larger Queen Sheets On Smaller Queen Mattresses?

Let's say that you have a set of California queen sheets and a standard queen mattress. You might want to give using the Cali queen sheets a try. However, it's worth noting that you will probably have a little bit of an issue getting them on the mattress and keeping them on. The extra inches will often give too much leeway for many people to feel comfortable.

Is There A Bed Bigger Than A Queen?

If you want more space than a queen can afford, you still have other options available to you. The next size up from a queen is a king-size bed. Like queen beds, king beds also have different variances in their dimensions. They usually also have the same names for these varieties—standard, Olympic, and California king.

What Is The Largest Bed Size On The Market?

Though California king beds are large, they are not the largest bed size money can buy. People who are yearning for an extremely large bed should consider getting an Alaska king size bed. This bed measures a whopping 108 inches wide by 108 inches tall. It also fits four people comfortably. However, finding Alaska king beds can prove to be a serious challenge.

Should you want a size larger, you may need to use multiple mattresses of a different size pushed together to get the results that you want. If you have the money for it, you also might be able to get a custom-made bed for your home. However, you would need to find a company willing to work with you for that endeavor.
